Executive Update

Message from the President

Hello everyone! As I write this update, we are in the process of Freedom to Read Week events and our 2nd annual Freedom to Read Week Photo Contest.

Last year's contest was a great success and we are hoping to build momentum in speaking out about what freedom to read means to you: Get the details about our Freedom to Read Week Photo Contest.

Coming up for the rest of the year is our annual NLLA Conference. This year the date is set for May 16, 2011 in order to partner with our colleagues from APLA who will be having their conference this year in our lovely capital city of St. John's. Further details on our conference will be posted in the coming weeks so keep your eyes and ears out for that. It promises to be a tremendous time!

In the past months, NLLA has seen a lot of success in events and awards for our members. In October, we held another celebration of Canadian Library Month with our poetry contest for K-12 students in the province. Find out more about our Canadian Library Month Poetry Contest. A special thank you to our Library Month organizer Erin Alcock and her wonderful team of volunteers.

As well, on November 16th, 2010 the Library Technicians and Assistants Interest Group held their 2nd annual LTAIG conference. The conference was again a success with sessions on Google Earth, Programming in the public library, E-readers, WorldCat Local and an open discussion forum on the Voice of LTAIG. Special thanks and big congratulations go out to the conference committee chaired by Karen Darby.

Over this current year, the Executive has been busy considering Member Communications Taskforce recommendations. Several initiatives have begun to reach out to members faster and provide great information on what the association is doing as well as libraries and information groups across the province. The Executive is also looking at how to reach out to those library staff who are not members so be on the lookout for these initiatives over the next little while.

In other news, this year the Canadian Health Libraries Association honoured George Beckett, Associate University Librarian, Health Sciences Library, MUN with an honorary lifetime membership for his contributions to the profession and the Library Technicians Interest Group of the Canadian Library Association recently honoured Karen Darby, Library Assistant, Health Sciences Library, Memorial University of Newfoundland, with their Award of Merit. NLLA congratulates these two members on their achievements.

Until next time,
Melissa
