Freedom to Read Week 2010 Photo Contest
Sponsored by the Newfoundland and Labrador Library Association (NLLA)
What is Freedom to Read Week?
Freedom to Read Week (February 21 – 27, 2010) is an annual event that encourages Canadians to think about and reaffirm
their commitment to intellectual freedom, which is guaranteed under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. It’s about protecting
your right to choose what you read, respecting the right of others to do the same, and celebrating this freedom.
If this is about reading, why have a Photo Contest?
We want to give you an opportunity to visually represent our freedom to read. Submit photos about freedom of expression, freedom
from censorship, anything that promotes the written word, anything that highlights how essential the freedom to read is to individuals,
communities, and societies.
Who can enter?
The contest is open to all photographers (amateur or professional) who reside in Newfoundland and Labrador.
There is no age restriction. If you have access to a camera, you can enter!
What’s the prize?
The winning photograph and photographer’s name will be featured on a 14” x 19” Freedom to Read Week
poster produced by NLLA and distributed for display in libraries across the province. The winning photographer will
receive a professionally mounted copy of the poster.
What are the rules?
- A maximum of 2 photographs will be accepted per entrant.
- Images must be 800 by 600 pixels at 72 dots per inch and should not exceed 900 kilobytes per image. Winners will be contacted if
higher resolution images are required for publication.
- Images must be submitted electronically to
nllafree2read@gmail.com. Entries will be acknowledged by reply e-mail.
- Each submission must include:

The photographer’s name, postal address, e-mail address, and telephone number.

The title and location of each photograph.
- Entries will be rated by a panel of 5 judges based on beauty, originality, quality, and relevance to the theme.
- Entries must be received by February 28, 2010.
What’s the legal stuff?
Submission of a photograph constitutes agreement to allow it to be reproduced, published and/or exhibited in print or online by NLLA.
The photographer retains ownership of all submitted images.
Photographers must own all rights to the works submitted. Images may be digitally altered, but the photographer must own all rights
to all parts of a digital composition. Photographers shall indemnify the NLLA for any loss or damage arising from any breach of
copyright.
It is the photographer’s responsibility to secure permission from people who appear in contest photos. Signed release forms
must be provided to the NLLA on request.
